Reflecting on Life Transitions

According to Michael Gelb (author and coach), brain researchers estimate that your unconscious database outweighs the conscious on an order exceeding ten million to one. This unconscious database is an incredible source of wisdom and genius. Developing a practice to engage this inner landscape can deepen reflection, enhance self-awareness, support clarity, and motivate purposeful action.

The unconscious mind relates well to the visual language of images, metaphors, and symbols. Collage is one effective medium to communicate with the unconscious and reveal insights about life.

What You’ll Need

·   Some paper or your journal

·   A pen

·   Optional: a print-out of your favorite collage

·   Your full attention and curiosity!

Time: Approximately 10-15 minutes

Instructions

 1. The three collages shown here were created by artists given the topic of transitions and featured in Kolaj Magazine in 2021. Take a few moments to consider which of the three images captures your eye (for whatever reason).

2. Looking at this one collage image, what part of the collage is most intriguing to you? Why? Capture your thoughts on a piece of paper or in your journal.

3. Continuing to write, reflecting on the following prompts:

  • What do you notice about this section of the collage? Describe that part in as much detail as you can – shape, color, size, texture, relationship to other objects in the collage, etc.

  • What emotion/s does that part of the collage evoke in you?

  • What might this section be saying about the transitions you are experiencing? About transitions in general?

  • What insights do you now have that might inspire further reflection or an action to consider?

If possible, print out a copy of your favorite collage and paste it in your journal, alongside your written reflections.
